Help Your 4-5 Year Old Child “Get Ready to Read”
These suggestions are adapted fromA Child Becomes a Reader-Birth Through Pre-School
- Talk with your child about letters of the alphabet.
- Collect and read alphabet books together.
- Point out and say the letters as they appear in books.
- Point to signs and labels that have letters, like street signs and foods in the grocery store.
- Make a sign with your childís name. Point to and say the letters together.
- Help your child hear and say the first sound in words, like “d” in dog.
- Help your child notice when different words start with the same sound, like “cat”, “car”, “coat”.
- Help your child hear words that rhyme, like “fish”, “dish” and “wish”.
- Introduce new words to your child.
- Encourage your child to find fun and joy in reading.
- Allow your child to choose the books you read together.
- Encourage your child to “pretend” to read parts of the book when you read together.
- Talk to your child about the stories you read and make connections to things in her own life.
- Ask “where”, “what”, and “how” questions to help your child follow along as you read.
- Help your child write his name, copy labels and write notes.
- Make alphabet books together.
- Make a family album together, write the names of family members.
