Hearing Screening
Hearing Screening

In accordance with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Laws and Regulations 105 CMR 200.400, the hearing of each student in the public schools is to be screened in the year of school entry and annually through grade 3 (or by age 9 in the case of ungraded classrooms), once in grades 6 through 8 (ages 12 through 14 in the case of ungraded classrooms), and once in grades 9 through 12 (ages 15 through 18 in the case of ungraded classrooms).  Parents/guardians will be notified of any screening failures with a referral form for the child's physician to complete and return to school nurse.

In Salem, students are screened in pre-school, grades K -3, grade 7 and grade 10.

Parents/guardians who wish to opt their child out of scheduled health screenings will need to submit a written request to the School Nurse. Parents/guardians should contact their School Nurse with any questions about scheduled health screenings.
